We tried to use ST 3.1 for presentations and it was really slow compared to webex. Our in-house sales group is paying extra for webex even though we have ST licenses.
I opened a case with IBM (a large BP asked me to open an incident with IBM due to many customers that were complaining about ST performance). I was requesting that they enhance the product in the screen-sharing mode. It appears that they have somewhat addressed this in ST 6.5.1 because I see in the notes that it will:
"Force screen sharing to use 8-bit color: This feature is available to improve the screen sharing performance in Sametime meetings."
We all know how the ST screen sharing "paints" the screen in one block at a time. Webex does not do this - the screen is instantly populated with the changes and it does not seem to reduce the screen to 8-bit color. Hopefully this will help out some with the speed of meetings. In testing with IBM, I remember that using the 8-bit was significantly faster than 24 or 32-bit (duh!) but the 8-bit color was not pretty on high-color screens (with training on properly sharing and creating presentations this could be better, though - do you REALLY need a full color picture to get the point across?)
Also, I told IBM to compare ST to WebEx and see for themselves how much faster webex is. IBM seems to be moving in the right direction. We have to remember that webex only does the online meetings - how much more does IBM give us!
